Fort Tancrémont and Museum
Re-opening of the Fort of Tancrémont from this 07th of May !
Built in two years and inaugurated on 8 August 1938, located on the Communes of PEPINSTER and THEUX, the Fort of TANCREMONT is the last of the four new forts built which, with the eight old forts rearmed and reinforced, constituted the Fortified Position of Liege, better known as PFL1. It was part of the Régiment des Forteresses de LIEGE.
The central massif of 3.5ha, has five combat blocks. It is surrounded by a ditch 8 metres wide and 6 metres deep. Each ditch is defended by an armed box.
After a stormy meeting, the German Lieutenant-General K. SPANG had to give Captain A. Devos, Battery Commander, the right to use the ditch. Devos, Battery Commander, the assurance on honour, that HM King Leopold III had indeed given the order to the whole Belgian Army to stop fighting. The Fort of Tancrémont had to lay down its arms the day after the capitulation, on 29 May 1940!
The Amicale du Fort will welcome you at the entrance block (B1). After a brief explanation given by a guide, you can enter the bowels of this fortress 20 metres below ground level... But don't forget to browse our website to learn more about its history.
